You have to swallow your pride to like Oh Land. Nonsense, of course you don’t.
The Danish singer-songwriter is terrific, blending Indy and extraordinary Pop into a mixture that otherwise only Lilly Allen or Lykke Li could manage so uninhibitedly – but naming those two shouldn’t be understood as a one-to-one sound reference. Only that Nanna Øland Fabricius, Oh Land’s birth name, is stunning and looks so much like a model that it almost hurts.
Nonetheless, the quality of her songs can’t be diminished by envy or being dragged over the coals. Under the surface she’s exactly as pretty in a sly, dark, glittery manner. Live on stage, she transforms into a cross between an elf and dervish, tending more to dervish.
Prognosis: “Voodoo” has what it takes to be a major hit. “Sun of a Gun” made it already. And the package as a whole is indecently devastating.
