Of course it would be hastily to call out the finest singer/songwriter-album of the year already in january. But a nominee with "La Grande", Laura Gibson surely is, for this title.
Because the songs, that the 32-years old woman from Portland has written during a campervan-renovation are chatoyantly beauties you can not catch but though they seem to be very close. The songs are homelike as an old platter, but Gibson would never rest on her laurels. She always sticks to the present, only being retro is too easy! Pop? Only thinking about it makes her laugh - although she has never been closre to it than with this record. She prefers to call it "self-assured". She wants to explore what strength feels like, after "Beasts Of Season" (2009) was an experience in vulnerability. According to this, the numerous comparisons to bands like "Feist" or "Cat Power" are traceable at the most in vocally ways. But the singularity, which Gibson adds to her IndieFolk-Songs isn“t comparable to anything.
