Comeback of the dream duo: creative head Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear produced “Forget” with Twin Shadow in 2010 - one of the most exciting debut albums of recent years.
In Taylor’s new project Cant, the two are equal partners and the cool wave sound of Twin Shadow’s debut is the starting point only for a handful of songs on “Dreams Come True”.
Together they take it all one step further towards chamber pop: in one occasion they mess up a neatly twisted electropop song with disharmonic disrupters, in another they build a song around a reduced piano melody being in no way inferior to the claustrophobia of Radiohead. And then they bring in clarinet, saxophone, and accordion to electronically obscure the arrangement.
This might seem unsettling at first but with time songs like “Too Late” or “Believe” come to stick – and with each new run the suspicion of holding a future classic album substantiates itself even more.
