John Taylor set a new world record for speed on the guitar in both the Guinness Book of World Records and in the Universal Records Databank.
John Taylor aka Dr. Hot Licks played the classical piece on the electric guitar that the most candidates going for the world speed record use, the “Flight of the Bumblebee” from the Russian Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow, written in 1899. The original was written for tempo 170 bpm (beats per minute).
The previous world record was held by Tiago Della Vega, a Brazilian rock guitarist. He set the record in 2008 by playing the “Flight of the Bumblebee” at 340 bpm.
In his world-record attempt, John Taylor gradually worked his way up from the original temp to 350 bpm, therewith breaking the world record. That wasn’t enough for Dr. Hot Licks and he made a few further attempts.
He continued with 380, then 450, 500 and finally he played the “Flight of the Bumblebee” at an unbelievable 600 bpm. Twice, “just to be safe”. The piece can hardly be recognized anymore as music but the technical proficiency is awesome, as even any amateur can hear when he sees the video of the official world record attempt.
His official listing in the Guinness Book of World Records was guaranteed by a representative on the spot and is already officially confirmed. Taylor can carry the title of “Fastest Guitar Player” in the world with pride from now on.
