VIDEOCLIP-REVIEW: “SINGLE LADIES (PUT A RING ON IT)” - BEYONCÉ

The music video accompanying the fifth #1 hit of the successful US singer Beyoncé oozes with sex appeal.

The video clip from 2008 focuses on three stunningly attractive women performing extremely dynamic, almost aggressive dance choreography. The sequence of dance steps is actually from Bob Fosse’s 1969 routine “Mexican Breakfast”. At first glance one might think that all three women are the Superstar herself, beyonce - put a ring on itbut the video director Jake Nava didn’t work with mirrors or trick effects. Both co-dancers are virtual look-a-likes of the Soul-Diva. Three power women? The video drives the point in as the singer appeals with “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” to feminine self-confidence while criticizing the fact that men wait far too long to pop the big question – only to wonder when their object of desire has already moved on -- “If you liked it, you should have put a ring on it”. The video’s director shows the dark side of love and power games in relationships perfectly. The clip is consistently shot in stark black & white on a bare stage. Stage light and shade alternate dramatically. The iconic video is incredibly sophisticated, and aesthetically it’s video artwork.
