MOLOTOV – LIVE IN MUNICH

Munich’s concert location Feierwerk was the June 9th date on their current European concert tour “Don’t You Know We’re Loco”.

Micky, Paco, Randy and Tito have been stirring up the Mexican music scene since the mid-nineties with a mélange of Rock and HipHop paired with socially critical lyrics, often prompting a comparison to Rage Against The Machine.

A few years ago I saw the band perform live for the first time at a small festival near Ulm, Germany. molotov - live in munichBack then they shared the line-up with the likes of Dog Eat Dog. Since then Molotov was seldom to be found live in our vicinity. So my colleague and I decided to go and consider the Munich gig a Revival.

As luck would have it, through our participation in the online sweepstakes, Molotov gave us free entry tickets with a Backstage Pass and Meet & Greet! We were more than happy to accept the good fortune.

Upon arrival at the concert venue we were to seek the tour manager who would coordinate our prize evening. Marcelo guided us to the backstage area where straightaway we saw the first Molotov band members rolling toward us on skateboards. After shaking hands with ‘la Banda’, we posed together for a group photo. The atmosphere was relaxed all around and the beer was well chilled. While chatting we found out with surprise that Micky speaks pretty good German and that his wife grew up in Germany.

Molotov had to dry their jeans jackets before the performance as well as was possible under hot lights, as the clothes dryer was kaputt. Around 9:45 p.m. we gathered and went back down for the imminent opening of the concert.

Hansa36 in Feierwerk could announce an almost sold-out house on this evening. The majority of the audience was Latino, and Molotov spoke Spanish on stage accordingly. It didn’t matter though, because music speaks its own language.

Besides songs like Frijolero”, “Amateur” (an adaptation of Falco’s Amadeus), MLTV also played sing-along pieces like “Voto Latino” and “Puto”, known for its controversial lyrics. The enthusiastic fans waved the national flag of Mexico in a show of sympathy and solidarity for the country.

The song “Gimme The Power” was an obligatory inclusion in the setlist – it’s been their most successful track in Germany. Incidentally, Molotov perform live with not one but two bass and exchange instruments often during the concert, with pleasure.

After about 1 ½ hours they finished with the guest appearance and the sweaty guests made their way happily home. According to the band, the Munich concert was one of the personal highlights on the current tour – quote: “Munich, as always best”. Together with our Molotov friends again, we had a nightcap before they left for their hotel, and we started off in the direction of our mattresses.

Meanwhile a new release is already in production. A live DVD/CD with the title “Desde Rusia Con Amor” should document their 16-year career in music.

Great review! i'm still wondering how did they do to perform on countries where they don't even know anything about Mexico or the local bands right here... like Deutschland, Rusia, Switzerland, Belgium, UK, and so on.. i mean, yeah its true that nowadays there are a lot of people of any nationality around the globe. I know that the majority of the audience were latin people, also the tourists that these months are in Europe. But thats a big step in a career of a musician i think... to play in other countries.. cheers!
